Hoi An

This was a day to further explore Hoi An and the surrounding villages.

We started the day with cruise on the Thu Bon river. The river is wide with a light current. The boats were typical Vietnamese tourist boats. We headed to a village that specialized in carpentry. All kinds of wood construction and carving is carried out in this village. The most famous of these is the Kim Bong carpentry village.

The carpentry shop in the village seems to be the mainstay. All employees are locals. Tourism is how they survive. Of course, folks in the tour group bought lots of trinkets. We didn't because I am into this new 'simple is good' mode. We have no place to display such things at home. So there is no point buying them.

We browsed through a market next to the carpentry shop. We tasted a bunch of Vietnamese fruits that were quite tasty. While we were walking along in the village we got to try out the Vietnamese way of carrying load. I tried it. It was quite heavy. Our guide told us that the old lady once walked 20 miles while carrying this load!

Finally we visited an organic farm in a village called Tra Que. It was a large farm with a variety of produce planted in neat rows. These were the same vegetables that would be served to us shortly. We arrived at the restaurant in the village for lunch. The chef demonstrated the making of Vietnamese pancakes. He also had individual group members make their own pancakes under his guidance. It was hilarious to watch the chef berate them if they didn't do it the way he wanted. The pancakes were quite good. As I said in an earlier post, I am learning to appreciate Vietnamese food. Lunch was, in addition to pancakes, a 5-course meal. Need I say it was delicious?
